This was not an academic workshop about stigma. It was a conversation for participants to explore stigma and how we support people with OUD and their families and work together in our communities to reduce stigma. We used portraits and videos to facilitate discussion, making it very interactive. UR RCOE partnered with hosts in rural communities across the country to hold these sessions and is looking forward to facilitating this Community Conversation, open to all RSV attendees.

Tough as a Mother is a public awareness campaign, launched in Colorado in May 2020, working to decrease stigma around maternal SUD, educate providers, and connect pregnant and parenting mothers to treatment and recovery supports in their communities. In this session, we learned how one rural region leveraged this existing public awareness campaign, and get inspired on how to do something similar in your community.

This breakout session provided insights from project leaders on how to respectfully collaborate with Indigenous communities. Furthermore, we shared the ways that the Community Conversations approach empowers individuals across communities to participate in and to lead change; supports recovery; and lays a foundation for current and future generations to live healthier lives.

A recent study, Stigmatizing Imagery For Substance Use Disorders: A Qualitative Exploration, explored the use of stigmatizing and non-stigmatizing imagery in the field of substance use disorders and law enforcement. While the discussion of stigmatizing language has been around, the discussion of stigmatizing imagery is important to have as it may have effects on treatment, recovery, and reintegration. The qualitative study interviewed people with lived substance use disorder experience who identified stigmatizing imagery and the possible implications it could have.

The report provides key findings from the study assessing substance use and recovery stigma by healthcare workers, compared to non-healthcare workers. The stigma that is perceived by people who use drugs or are in recovery (PWUD/IR) was found to be a structural concern as a large population are opting out of going to the doctor, leaving them open to a variety of untreated illnesses.

More than 450 clinicians and counselors in rural New England were surveyed about stigma as a barrier to treating patients for opioid used disorder (OUD) as well as practitioners’ beliefs about medications for OUD. Over half (55 percent) ranked stigma as the highest barrier among other factors such as time and staffing, medication diversion, and organizational/clinic barriers.

Illuminate Colorado, an RCORP Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) grantee, and partners presented on their Tough as a Mother campaign. Tough as a Mother is a statewide campaign launched in May 2020 and has been working to decrease the stigma around maternal substance use disorder. The Illuminate Colorado Team provided an overview of their campaign and how others can access the shared resources, followed by time for Q&A.
