The toolkit Stimulant Safety: Getting Amped Up to Reduce Harms When Using Stimulants was developed through the CDC-funded National Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center in collaboration with the NASTAD Drug User Health team and consultants. This resource provides education on the reasons people take stimulants, how to minimize harm, reduce stigma around stimulants, support peoples' positive experiences, the intersection of stimulant use and sexual safety, and much more.

In the United States, combined stimulant/opioid overdose mortality has risen dramatically over the last decade. These increases may particularly affect non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic populations. We used death certificate data from the US National Center for Health Statistics (2007–2019) to compare state-level trends in overdose mortality due to opioids in combination with 1) cocaine and 2) methamphetamine and other stimulants (MOS) across racial/ethnic groups (non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic Asian American/Pacific Islander).

Investment in rural maternal care is a featured priority of the new all-of-government approach to high rates of maternal mortality across the United States. The plan announced last week stresses more staff and capabilities for rural obstetrics and increased funding of the HRSA/FORHP-supported Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies Program. A 2019 study from the Rural Health Research Gateway found a greater number of potentially life-threatening complications with childbirth in rural areas.

Drug overdose deaths increased 30% in the United States from 2019 to 2020. Known health disparities exist in overdose mortality rates, particularly among certain racial/ethnic minority populations. Implementation of an evidence-based, culturally responsive, multi-sectoral approach is critical to reducing disparities in overdose rates. This includes addressing structural barriers and enhancing efforts such as linkage to care and harm reduction services.

Innovative at their inception three decades ago, drug courts confront a practical and ethical obligation to reimagine some core practices and assumptions. A shifting legal and public health landscape means, for example, increased scrutiny of the courts’ focus on abstinence and mandated treatment, and the use of jail. On Monday, the U.S. Department of Health & Human services announced approximately $4 million to four awardees through its Rural Maternity and Obstetrics Management Strategies Program to enhance access to and coordination of obstetric and maternal care in rural communities.
