Blueprints Programs website houses a repository of evidence-based primary prevention programs and resources. You can search for programs that fit the issue you are addressing, the audience you seek to help, as well as the delivery venue.

Tough as a Mother is a public awareness campaign, launched in Colorado in May 2020, working to decrease stigma around maternal SUD, educate providers, and connect pregnant and parenting mothers to treatment and recovery supports in their communities. In this session, we learned how one rural region leveraged this existing public awareness campaign, and get inspired on how to do something similar in your community.

This session covered how primary prevention efforts fit within each of the various stages of the Continuum of Care Model. Attendees learned how to (1) engage community stakeholders from each of the 12 sectors and (2) evidence-based practices to not only inform, but to reduce stigma and to create open dialogue as it relates to SUD.

Each resource supplements the SAMHSA Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants publication.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) published Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants in 2018. The National Center on Substance Abuse and Child Welfare (NCSACW) developed companion materials that offer information and strategies to support pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders (SUDs) in the child welfare system.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health has reported that overdose mortality more than tripled for pregnant and postpartum women from 2018 to 2021. Findings from the study referenced by NIDA show that there are significant barriers which can obstruct care for this population living with substance use disorders.
