During this session, Dr. Lopata discussed federal/HRSA investments focused on improving the health outcomes for and reducing health disparities among maternal and child health populations. More specifically, Dr. Lopata discussed the multiple programs/interventions funded by HRSA that together work (along with federal, state, regional, and local partners) to improve the prevention, screening, and treatment of opioid use disorder during pregnancy and Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome in the United States.

The current landscape of mental health services reflects both tremendous challenges and opportunities. With the impact of COVID-19 front and center in the national discourse, and the planning for a system involving a 988-crisis response, there is much work ahead. This paper, Ready to Respond, is the umbrella paper for the 2021 technical assistance coalition series developed through the National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors in partnership with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It aims to lay out a roadmap as states emerge from the pandemic and need, more than ever, a full continuum of psychiatric care.

HRSA has released a number of new resources to help recipients of Provider Relief Funds (PRF) comply with reporting requirements. Those who received funds prior to June 30, 2020, can access the portal through September 30 for reporting purposes. There is a fact sheet, a data entry workbook, and a webcast today at 3 p.m. ET to provide technical assistance.

The Opioid Response Network is making available a new dental curriculum on SBIRT (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment), an evidence-based approach to managing patients with or at risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).
The curriculum was developed for dentists by the ORN grant through a collaboration with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the Division on Substance Use Disorders, Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NYSPI.

After decades of increased opioid pain reliever prescribing, providers are rapidly reducing prescribing. We hypothesized that reduced access to prescribed opioid pain relievers among patients previously reliant upon opioid pain relievers would result in increased illicit opioid use.
