Contingency management has empirical support but limited implementation. This report provides an overview of contingency management, barriers of implementation, and recommendation on how to overcome the challenges of implementation. Evidence-based treatment for people with stimulant use disorder is important as the U.S. has been experiencing an overdose crisis resulting in overdose deaths.

The Health Affairs Forefront is a way for individuals in the health care industry to "catch up on the ideas that thought leaders and peers are exploring in the field". Recently, contingency management (CM) was discussed, including ways to make the behavioral intervention available to more people. The discussion included what CM is, why it is not more widely available, training considerations, and recommendations on how Federal policy could change to increase the availability.

This webinar described the unique role of peer support specialists in the CDC-funded pilot project Reducing Overdose After Release from Incarceration (ROAR). The ROAR pilot combines provision of medication for opioid use disorder with support from Oregon Certified Recovery Mentors (CRMs) to reduce overdose risk among women released from prison.

This webinar provided new information on the risks and clinical challenges presented by individuals who use psychostimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription stimulants). A review of the clinical strategies that are important in working with this population were presented, including psychosocial and medication treatments for those with stimulant use disorder. The Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Office (ATTC NCO) convened the Contingency Management Task Force (CM Task Force) in April 2023 at the request of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The SAMHSA Guidance for Implementation of Contingency Management Training and Technical Assistance was developed by the CM Task Force.
