The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-funded Opioid Response Network (ORN) initiative has launched the Stand Against Stigma (SAS) Challenge. This is an opportunity for those in the healthcare industry to address and dispel stigma related to individuals with substance use disorders through easy, daily activity.

The University of Rochester Recovery Center of Excellence, one of three FORHP-supported Rural Centers of Excellence on Substance Use Disorder, has developed comprehensive training on the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) in primary care. This no-cost training prepares providers and staff to deliver evidence-based care to patients. Continuing education credits are available.

The University of Rochester Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence is offering free trainings to provide guidance on evidence-based strategies to work through resistance and encourage help-seeking behavior. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Treatment Seeking (CBT-TS) is an evidence-based technique to encourage help seeking among those in need.

Clinical experts from the Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) created the Substance Use Disorder 101 Core Curriculum for Healthcare Professionals. With the addition of two new module topics, the 23 modules in this 2023 curriculum provide an overview of evidence-based practices in the prevention, identification, and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring medical and psychiatric conditions for a variety of populations.

The Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) Mentoring Program support is recommended for clinicians who are contemplating or have recently begun prescribing MOUD and would like additional support. PCSS offers three tiers of service at no cost to the recipient: (1) a discussion forum, (2) the ability to submit a clinical question through the PCSS website, and (3) one-on-one mentoring.

The National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine defines stigma as a range of negative attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that are associated with certain conditions such as addiction. Dr. Nora Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), has been a leading voice in talking about the “chilling effect” stigma has on our ability to address substance use and addiction in our country. In an April 2020 perspective piece published in the New England Journal of Medicine and in her NIDA blog piece, Dr. Volkow explains how stigma can prevent people from seeking care and can even contribute to their continuing addiction. We encourage our visitors to read Dr. Volkow’s writings as well as to familiarize themselves with the efforts to reduce stigma led by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) including the NIH HEAL InitiativeSM, which has made addressing stigma a key element in their efforts to address opioid addiction.

The Opioid Response Network is making available a new dental curriculum on SBIRT (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment), an evidence-based approach to managing patients with or at risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).
The curriculum was developed for dentists by the ORN grant through a collaboration with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the Division on Substance Use Disorders, Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NYSPI.

This webinar provided the foundational information necessary to plan and implement effective anti-stigma strategies. We defined stigma and internalized stigma and their impact on vulnerable populations—drug policy, public perception, healthcare access. We then explored relevant resources, helpful tools, and connect with national organizations doing work in this space.
