Training To Work Through Resistance and Encourage Help-Seeking Behavior: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Treatment Seeking (CBT-TS)

The University of Rochester Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence is offering free trainings to provide guidance on evidence-based strategies to work through resistance and encourage help-seeking behavior. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Treatment Seeking (CBT-TS) is an evidence-based technique to encourage help seeking among those in need.

Starting in April, two types of trainings to fit your specific needs will be offered:

1. CBT 101 + CBT-TS: Mondays, 2 pm Eastern Time : This training begins with the fundamental skills for delivering Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Peers and other non-clinical staff may benefit from this course. Training includes methods to encourage help-seeking behavior among those in need of treatment. Training involves four weekly, one-hour sessions starting on the first Monday and concluding on the fourth Monday of the month and includes:

  • Training on effective listening and communication skills
  • Training on the essentials of cognitive-behavioral techniques
  • Training on the evidence of CBT-TS
  • Training on the most common reasons individuals resist treatment
  • Training on strategies to work through resistance and stigma and encourage help-seeking behavior

2. CBT-TS: Fridays, 1 pm Eastern Time : This training is created for those who are comfortable with the basics of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. This may include, but is not limited to, physicians, psychologists, social workers, nurses, and pharmacists. Training involves a one-time, one-hour session on the first Friday of each month and includes:

  • Training on the evidence of CBT-TS
  • Training on the most common reasons individuals resist treatment
  • Training on strategies to work through resistance and stigma and encourage help-seeking behavior
