As states seek new tools to meet the needs of individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid use disorder, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) offer unique resources and examples for developing integrated and cost-effective health care services for complex and chronic conditions. The National Academy for State Health Policy developed this toolkit to share innovations, resources, and lessons learned from five state teams (AL, IL, SD, VA, and WI) that are working to strengthen the capacity of their FQHCs to deliver SUD care

JBS’s Robert Childs discussed the key concepts of harm reduction and evidence-based harm reduction interventions that grantees can implement to reduce overdose in their rural communities. Staff from Arkansas Behavioral Health Integration Network shared lessons learned from their RCORP-Planning grant in gaining buy-in for harm reduction concepts and planning for harm reduction services in rural Arkansas.

The latest feature article in The Rural Monitor spotlights a New Mexico doula program that reaches American Indian, Hispanic, and other populations who lack nearby labor/delivery units, a Minnesota program helping moms experiencing incarceration, and a North Dakota program training postpartum doulas to care for families impacted by opioid use disorder and other substance use.

Participants learned about rural resources for funding, data, program evaluation, and how to effectively grow the visibility of an RCORP project. The panel explored opportunities to engage with State Offices of Rural Health (SORH), discussed SORH’s top ten resources, and outlined the wide variety of TA and efforts of SORH across the region.

The National CLAS Standards are a set of 15 action steps intended to advance health equity, improve quality, and help eliminate health care disparities by providing a blueprint for individuals and health care organizations to implement culturally and linguistically appropriate services. This digital toolkit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Kentucky’s Community and Economic Development Initiative includes examples of rural placemaking projects along with technical assistance providers, funders, and guides to resources.
