The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has updated the 2018 document which outlines best practices for implementing and operating recovery housing. Assisting individuals with recovery housing is critical in the journey of recovery and can lead to the improvement of health, reduce overdose risks, and sustain recovery.

During this session, attendees had the opportunity to have topic-focused discussions among their peers in smaller, facilitated breakout groups. The groups all convened in the ballroom, and attendees had the opportunity for sharing best practices and obstacles, asking questions, and participating in other forms of discussion throughout the session.

This session discussed the barriers typically encountered and workarounds such as money, staff, and location. We encouraged participants to bring successes, near successes, and non-successes in expanding access over the last 3 years.

The Government Accountability Office discusses challenges rural communities face related to healthcare access, such as limited healthcare providers, travel distance and transportation issues, insurance coverage, and access to broadband.

Researchers interviewed primary care physicians in rural, western Pennsylvania to get their views on barriers to rural health care. There were three key themes that came out of the report including cost and insurance, geographic dispersion, and provider shortages/burnout. The providers also made suggestions on possible solutions and gave information on ways they have helped address the situation

Researchers at Indiana University conducted one-on-one interviews with clinical providers and other stakeholders in the recovery arena to better understand the slow uptake of the drug most used to treat opioid use disorder. Biases against buprenorphine was the most consistent theme, though the reason for bias differed amongst stakeholders. Clinical providers and behavioral health care providers preferred the abstinence approach rather than use of medications.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded an evaluation study of post-overdose outreach programs in Massachusetts known as the PRONTO Study. This study group assessed the evidence on post-overdose outreach.

Buprenorphine (Suboxone) is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). However, there have been widespread reports of diversion and misuse. This study examined motivations for nonprescribed buprenorphine use among rural residents.

Naloxone leave behind programs are a popular public health intervention for combatting the opioid epidemic. These programs are designed for first responders to educate and equip high risk, nonmedical individuals to respond to opioid overdose scenarios. However, stigma and misconceptions regarding naloxone remain common among medical providers, including emergency medical services (EMS) members.
