The CDC report released in September 2022 highlights that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths were preventable. Among key findings, the report finds that one of the leading underlying causes of pregnancy-related death includes mental health conditions related to substance use disorder.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health has reported that overdose mortality more than tripled for pregnant and postpartum women from 2018 to 2021. Findings from the study referenced by NIDA show that there are significant barriers which can obstruct care for this population living with substance use disorders.

This handbook is intended to address this particular set of workplace issues- namely those that arise from experiences of loss, grief and trauma. These issues can surface within the workplace itself, or can be imported into the work setting from workers’ personal lives. This handbook will be useful for managers, supervisors and human resource specialists who are interested in developing their understanding of how the very real issues associated with loss, grief and trauma can be tackled when they show up in work settings. The 2020 National Drug Threat Assessment (NDTA) is a comprehensive assessment of the threat posed to the United States by the trafficking and abuse of illicit drugs, the diversion and abuse of licit drugs, and the laundering of proceeds generated through illicit drug sales. It also addresses the role domestic groups, including organized violent gangs, serve in domestic drug trafficking. The most widely trafficked drugs are discussed in terms of their availability, consumption and overdose related deaths, production and cultivation, transportation, and distribution.
