Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder (PPW-OUD)

Posted 1/9/2023 (updated 3/27/2024)

The CDC report released in September 2022 highlights that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths were preventable. Among key findings, the report finds that one of the leading underlying causes of pregnancy-related death includes mental health conditions and deaths to suicide and overdose/poisoning related to substance use disorder. The CDC notes that everyone can help prevent pregnancy-related deaths, which more than half occur up to one year after delivery. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to determine whether their patient is pregnant and take this into consideration during diagnosis and treatment. Follow-ups after pregnancy are important to get them the care they need.
