Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening inflammation of the heart’s chambers and valves that can be difficult and expensive to treat. Like hepatitis and HIV, infective endocarditis can be caused by using needles that are not sterile. This guide was created for harm reduction medical staff and volunteers as a resource about the types of wounds common with injection drug use and also to increase knowledge about treatment modalities for this population. Skin and soft-tissue infections are the most common cause of hospitalization among people who inject drugs.

The National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD) hosted the Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B Vaccination Efforts in People Who Inject Drugs webinar last week, September 10, 2020. The session featured Centers for Disease Control and Prevention subject matter experts who discussed the epidemiology of hepatitis A and hepatitis B in people who use and inject drugs and the rationale for the vaccination recommendations. The session also featured several jurisdictions and partner organizations who shared their lessons learned and best practices for reaching and implementing vaccination services in this community.

New medications for office-based treatment of opioid
addiction are comparable in efficacy to other chronic
conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension
when combined with other interventions and as part of a
comprehensive care plan. They are safe, highly effective,
can be prescribed and/or administered at the Community
Health Center, with a sustainable business plan.
