This presentation covered recovery housing and MOUD in the context of issues emerging in rural America resulting from the pandemic and its impact on the rates of SUD and drug overdose. Also, presenters discussed the impact of the pandemic on corrections and the actions of states in response to COVID as it affects those with SUD. Presenters gave an overview of how recovery housing in this context can be developed especially in rural areas.

This webinar will provide an overview of racial and ethnic minority members of rural communities; describe the relationship between social determinants of health, health disparities, health equity, and rural racial and ethnic minority populations; and propose characteristics for an effective engagement and collaboration plan for working with these populations. Sonoran Prevention Works (SPW) shared some of its experiences implementing harm reduction in Cochise County, one of the more rural counties in AZ. SPW provides street-based outreach, testing, and peer support; offers training, education, and technical assistance and TA; and engages in local and state advocacy work.

This presentation provided an overview of the (1) current U.S. prevalence of opioid abuse and OUD and their societal consequences, (2) impacts of the opioid epidemic on rural geographic areas and populations, (3) recent emergence of synthetic opioids (e.g., fentanyl) and xylazine in the U.S. drug supply, and (4) most empirically supported treatment for patients with OUD.
