How Cultural and Linguistic Competence can reduce Health Disparities in Latinx Communities Webinar Resources

Posted 8/25/2020 (updated 3/28/2024)

The RCORP-TA sponsored webinar "How Cultural and Linguistic Competence can reduce Health Disparities in Latinx Communities" was held on August 18, 2020.

According to SAMHSA’s National Survey of Drug Use and Health, in 2018, 8.6 million Hispanics had a mental or substance use disorder. Yet we continue to see extremely low service utilization rates among Latinos in the United States when it comes to accessing behavioral health services.

Cultural and linguistic competence (CLC) has gained attention as a potential strategy to reducing health disparities and achieving health equity in health care. This webinar demonstrates how providers can reduce disparities through culturally and linguistically responsive and unbiased quality care including understanding the culturally and linguistically appropriate ways to deliver services to them by examining individual cultural factors that can affect health and health care, such as language, communication styles, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors.
