Telemedicine is increasingly being used to treat patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). It has particular value in rural areas of the United States impacted by the opioid crisis as these areas have a shortage of trained addiction medicine providers. Patient satisfaction significantly impacts positive clinical outcomes in OUD treatment and thus is of great clinical interest.

The latest feature article in The Rural Monitor spotlights a New Mexico doula program that reaches American Indian, Hispanic, and other populations who lack nearby labor/delivery units, a Minnesota program helping moms experiencing incarceration, and a North Dakota program training postpartum doulas to care for families impacted by opioid use disorder and other substance use.

This presentation included an overview of the Moms Do Care EMPOWER (Engaging Mothers for Positive Outcomes with Early Referrals) program at Baystate Franklin Medical Center (BFMC). We discussed our history and program model.
