Non-fatal opioid overdose (NFOO) is a significant cause of opioid-related morbidity in the United States. As the number of NFOOs continues to grow, it is important to understand the short- and long-term consequences of NFOO. This report examines the existing literature on the acute and chronic health and functional outcomes of individuals who experience NFOO, and also identifies differences in outcomes for NFOOs involving illicitly-manufactured fentanyl.

The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) convened a Technical Working Group on Resuscitation Training in Naloxone Programs to ensure that overdose programs in New York State (NYS) and elsewhere are afforded the best possible resuscitation protocol guidance tailored to suspected opioid overdoses in diverse settings.

In 2016, the United States Congress authorized and appropriated funding to fight the opioid epidemic through the Department of Health and Human Services . Among other initiatives, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) gave the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration authority and support to implement new grant programs focused on preventing overdose and treating individuals with OUD.

Syringe service programs (SSPs), which provide access to sterile syringes and other injection equipment and their safe disposal after use,* represent a highly successful human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention intervention. SSPs are associated with a 58% reduction in the incidence of HIV infection among persons who inject drugs. In addition, SSPs have led efforts to prevent opioid overdose deaths by integrating evidence-based opioid overdose education and naloxone distribution (OEND) programs. OEND programs train laypersons to respond during overdose events and provide access to naloxone and directions for drug delivery. SSPs are ideal places for OEND because they provide culturally relevant services designed to reach persons at high risk for experiencing or observing an opioid overdose.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) is conducted annual and provides nationally representative data on the use of substances (tobacco, alcohol, and drugs), substance use disorders, those who received substance use treatment, and mental health issues and services. This survey is conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The analysis dashboard also shows the provisional number of drug overdose deaths by drug or drug class.
