The Addiction Technology Transfer Center Network Coordinating Office (ATTC NCO) convened the Contingency Management Task Force (CM Task Force) in April 2023 at the request of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The SAMHSA Guidance for Implementation of Contingency Management Training and Technical Assistance was developed by the CM Task Force.

This webinar provided new information on the risks and clinical challenges presented by individuals who use psychostimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription stimulants). A review of the clinical strategies that are important in working with this population were presented, including psychosocial and medication treatments for those with stimulant use disorder. The curriculum focuses on the effects of substance abuse on families, parenting, and the parent-child relationship, incorporating Joan and Eric Erickson’s eight themes of growth spanning the life cycle and the Stone Center’s Self-in-Relation theory of women’s development. Combining experiential and didactic exercises, this approach is designed to enhance parents’ self-awareness and thereby increase understanding of their children.

The Health Affairs Forefront is a way for individuals in the health care industry to "catch up on the ideas that thought leaders and peers are exploring in the field". Recently, contingency management (CM) was discussed, including ways to make the behavioral intervention available to more people. The discussion included what CM is, why it is not more widely available, training considerations, and recommendations on how Federal policy could change to increase the availability.

Contingency management has empirical support but limited implementation. This report provides an overview of contingency management, barriers of implementation, and recommendation on how to overcome the challenges of implementation. Evidence-based treatment for people with stimulant use disorder is important as the U.S. has been experiencing an overdose crisis resulting in overdose deaths.

This presentation will focus on the relationship between trauma and substance use as it relates to treatment for women, as well as a discussion of impactful trauma-informed and gender-responsive interventions. The evidence-based interventions will be based on Seeking Safety and Finding Your Best Self models, both of which are present-focused and easily implemented in any treatment setting.
