Whether an opioid overdose death is unintentional or intentional (i.e., suicide), it can be difficult to disentangle. The suffering and hopelessness associated with addiction often lead to indifference to living or dying and to extreme risk taking. In this presentation, examples were described and presented from an opioid-specific suicide prevention training module that is part of the SafeSide Prevention learning program

This session provided an overview of the challenges facing the rural behavioral health workforce and covered available resources and successful strategies that have been implemented in rural communities to address these challenges, especially in light of the opioid crisis.

This session highlighted the ways in which data from RCORP consortia are used, how service capacity and access have changed, and whether there is evidence that the health status of rural residents is improving. Stigma and bias among community members, health care providers, and even family members toward individuals with substance use disorder negatively affects the care provided to this population. Stigma prevents individuals from seeking treatment and continues to divide them from their families, their communities, and the evidence-based treatments available.

Dr. Brooklyn discussed the following topics: the implementation of a Hub and Spoke model can lead to a significant increase in number of people with OUD treated in rural areas by providing resources for small and rural medical and behavioral health practices and a novel program to increase dosing compliance and security through the use of secure medication dispensers and a Smartphone app can increase access to MOUD in rural areas.

We began with a critical examination of the history of family separation in the US to lay the groundwork for a discussion of both provider and patient trust and mistrust. The stigma and discrimination that pregnant, postpartum, and parenting people with substance use disorder was explored. We concluded with concrete suggestions to improve provider wellness, child development, and community cohesion.
