The Opioid Response Network is making available a new dental curriculum on SBIRT (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment), an evidence-based approach to managing patients with or at risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).
The curriculum was developed for dentists by the ORN grant through a collaboration with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the Division on Substance Use Disorders, Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NYSPI.

This presentation covered recovery housing and MOUD in the context of issues emerging in rural America resulting from the pandemic and its impact on the rates of SUD and drug overdose. Also, presenters discussed the impact of the pandemic on corrections and the actions of states in response to COVID as it affects those with SUD. Presenters gave an overview of how recovery housing in this context can be developed especially in rural areas.

Like all professions, the addictions treatment field is faced with the challenges of employee substance use and abuse and their impact on retention of quality staff. Because the addictions field employees a disproportionate number of individuals – by recent estimates close to half of the treatment workforce – in recovery, the field faces particular retention challenges. This toolkit provides meaningful and practical guidance to the problem of substance misuse among addictions professionals.

Rural communities are finding innovative ways to combat dual crises: an affordable-housing shortage and the overdose and substance misuse epidemic. This presentation highlighted (1) federally subsidized housing regulations related to affordable housing for residents with a history of SUD and (2) cross-sector approaches to providing housing and support services to residents in recovery.

This session covered multiple aspects of establishing and operating recovery housing in rural America, from planning to funding and through staff hiring, development of policies and procedures, and building program support. Dr. Fletcher and co-presenters will discuss outcomes, the impact on families and individuals, and working with communities to address NIMBY and other concerns.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has published the new resource "Counseling Approaches To Promote Recovery From Problematic Substance Use and Related Issues". This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) provides guidance to counselors, administrators, and supervisors about recovery-oriented services, supports, and care, allowing them to better serve individuals in or seeking recovery from problematic substance use.

There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

Creating and maintaining an open, safe, and inclusive setting that reflects warmth and promotes connection and belonging are essential elements of peer-led, peer-driven, social model recovery homes. Recovery housing and a social recovery approach offer a broad, holistic, multifaceted strategy for rural or urban communities. This presentation detailed the critical role of the Peer-Led, Peer-Driven Social Model of Recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Treatment Seeking (CBT-TS) is an evidence-based technique to encourage help seeking among those in need.
