Adverse childhood experiences, known as ACEs, are defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as "potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood." One common example is experienced by children growing up in a household with parents engaged in substance use. This publication is the first in a two-part series addressing the relationship between ACEs and substance use throughout the life cycle, covering substance use as an ACE from infancy through adolescence.

Medications for opioid use disorder, including buprenorphine hydrochloride and methadone hydrochloride, are highly effective at improving outcomes for individuals with the disorder. For pregnant women, use of these medications also improves pregnancy outcomes, including the risk of preterm birth. Despite the known benefits of medications for opioid use disorder, many pregnant and nonpregnant women with the disorder are not receiving them.

Substance use and its progression to impairment, loss of control, and development of substance use disorders is a significant problem for adolescents and young adults. September 2023 is National Recovery Month and HRSA’s Office of Women’s Health has a toolkit to support organizations and health care providers that care for women living with opioid use disorder (OUD). The toolkit provides strategies to engage women with OUD, care coordination for support, and other resources.
