A planning committee of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine organized and conducted a two-day virtual public workshop that brought together data experts, program implementers and evaluators, and other key interested parties to explore data collection efforts, evidence gaps, and research needs on harm reduction for people who use drugs (PWUD).

This presentation will focus on the relationship between trauma and substance use as it relates to treatment for women, as well as a discussion of impactful trauma-informed and gender-responsive interventions. The evidence-based interventions will be based on Seeking Safety and Finding Your Best Self models, both of which are present-focused and easily implemented in any treatment setting.

More than 600 people registered and 300 attended an information session on Thursday, June 30, 2022 about first-of-its kind funding to address rural homelessness from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. During this session, we discussed what meaningful inclusion is (and is not) and we offered tangible steps toward developing trust, dignity, and inclusion of PWUDs. Meeting people where they are requires an element of internal self-reflection and honesty, both personally and within the organization.

A collaborative community process to define a town by what it offers the people who live there is the short way to describe the work of placemaking. This digital toolkit from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the University of Kentucky’s Community and Economic Development Initiative includes examples of rural placemaking projects along with technical assistance providers, funders, and guides to resources.

Advancing health equity involves ensuring that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. This also applies to behavioral health. In conjunction with quality services, this involves addressing social determinants, such as employment and housing stability, insurance status, proximity to services, culturally responsive care – all of which have an impact on behavioral health outcomes.
