Engaging with People with Lived Experience in Opioid Settlement Decision-Making

Posted 2/2/2024 (updated 3/28/2024)

The National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP) provides information on why and how to include people with lived experience in opioid settlement decision-making.

As states administer opioid settlement funds, they’re seeking ways to engage people with lived experience in decision-making, policy development, and program implementation.

Why it matters: Collaborating with people with lived experience can help states develop services that more closely meet the needs of people who are impacted by the opioid epidemic. And yet, systemic barriers can get in the way of engaging these individuals in the policymaking process.

NASHP shines a light on strategies that states are using to engage people with lived experience in opioid settlement decision-making, as well as lessons learned and pitfalls to avoid.
