This fact sheet from the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health about AI/AN Maternal Mental Health provides information on the disparities American Indian and Alaskan Native (AI/AN) women experience including Maternal Death, Trauma: A Contributing Factor to Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), and Inequities and Systemic Racism Lead to Stress and Adverse Outcomes.

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) provides several behavioral warning signs and symptoms you can look out for in children and youth. While certain behavior can be a part of growing up, the warning signs and symptoms listed by the NIMH may be a reason to contact a health professional. Mental illnesses can be treated and talking with your child or teen can help you identify when to see a health professional.

AHA recently released two case studies focusing on behavioral health in young people. “Community Partnerships: Improving Behavioral Health Access for San Diego’s Youth” focuses on Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, which in 2015 set forth a strategic plan to transform mental health by treating the whole child, integrating physical and behavioral health. “Community Partnerships: Improving Behavioral Health Access for Virginia’s Youth” examines the initiative put forth by Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters to transform pediatric mental health services through dedication and partnerships.

This presentation will focus on the relationship between trauma and substance use as it relates to treatment for women, as well as a discussion of impactful trauma-informed and gender-responsive interventions. The evidence-based interventions will be based on Seeking Safety and Finding Your Best Self models, both of which are present-focused and easily implemented in any treatment setting.

This toolkit is designed primarily for substance use and child welfare practitioners, as well as other service providers and health system planners who offer services to, or design services with, pregnant women and new mothers who use substances. Much is changing in the substance use and child welfare fields to bring forth approaches that are culturally safe, trauma informed, harm reduction-oriented and participant-driven. This toolkit highlights these advances and invites people working in both systems to think about how we can continue to improve our work, in partnership with the women who use these services.

The curriculum focuses on the effects of substance abuse on families, parenting, and the parent-child relationship, incorporating Joan and Eric Erickson’s eight themes of growth spanning the life cycle and the Stone Center’s Self-in-Relation theory of women’s development. Combining experiential and didactic exercises, this approach is designed to enhance parents’ self-awareness and thereby increase understanding of their children.

The CHARM or “CHildren And Recovering Mothers” Collaborative is a group of providers from in and around Waldo County, Maine, who are serving mothers and families dealing with pregnancy that is affected by substance use.
