We know from RCORP grantees, first responders, hospitals, people who use drugs, the media and other allies that many communities are seeing spikes in overdose (OD) events and deaths since the onset of COVID-19. Sometimes these deaths come at alarming levels because of stretched public health infrastructure and the time it takes to turn around data. The webinar took place on May 26, 2020.

The Opioid Response Network is making available a new dental curriculum on SBIRT (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment), an evidence-based approach to managing patients with or at risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).
The curriculum was developed for dentists by the ORN grant through a collaboration with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the Division on Substance Use Disorders, Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NYSPI.

Effective Harm Reduction Strategies for People Who Actively Use Opioids and/or Psychostimulants
Participants will learn evidenced-based harm reduction strategies to keep people who use opioids and psychostimulants alive with reduced disease burden. Presenters will discuss methods of engaging people who actively use opioids and/or psychostimulants, harm reduction interventions, overdose prevention and response, overamping prevention and response, and linkages to care.

Building on Part I of the stigma webinar series and its introduction of a statewide collective impact model for addressing stigma, this webinar delivered the first part of the model that also served as its conceptual framework. This webinar introduced the stages of change and showed grantees how these apply to their target populations. We also discussed how those same principles applied to grantee engagement of community stakeholders and their openness to evidence-based practices that reduce morbidity and mortality related to SUD/OUD.

This presentation highlighted The Health Wagon’s Rural Communities Opioid Response program, Strengthening and Expanding Substance Use Disorder and Opioid Use Disorder Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Programs in Southwest Virginia. The program is a consortium-based implementation that aims to reduce the morbidity and mortality of substance use disorder (SUD), including opioid use disorder (OUD), in rural communities in Southwest Virginia at the highest risk for SUD.
