The National CLAS Standards are intended to advance health equity, improve quality, and help eliminate health care disparities by establishing a blueprint for health and health care organizations to:
Principal Standard: Provide effective, equitable, understandable, and respectful quality care and services that are responsive to diverse cultural health beliefs and practices, preferred languages, health literacy, and other communication needs.

Substance use and its progression to impairment, loss of control, and development of substance use disorders is a significant problem for adolescents and young adults. A new article in RHIhub's The Rural Monitor describes the community's understanding of Native culture in Gallup, New Mexico to take an effective, holistic community-wide approach to recovery of SUD. The article highlights a community-wide consortium that works hard to tackle the issue of alcohol and substance use disorders through withdrawal management, peer counseling, assisting with housing, and other services.

As RCORP Grantees continue to build and grow partnerships with Indigenous peoples and communities, further information is needed to support these partnerships through building trust, understanding community dynamics, and recognizing the importance of patient-centered care.
