Researchers looked at records for 917 patients who engaged with a peer recovery coach via telehealth after discharge from emergency departments for opioid use. The investigation focused on one Indiana-based hospital system that included six hospitals located in cities and seven that had rural Critical Access Hospital designations.

The Housing Assistance Council's new Rural Resource Guide: Affordable Housing and Recovery in Rural Communities is an effort towards assisting local rural organizations with proper resources. While many across the U.S. are facing substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid misuse, housing is essential to addressing the epidemic. The guide is meant as a resource to housing practitioners looking to help provide homes to individuals affected by SUD.

Illuminate Colorado, an RCORP Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) grantee, and partners presented on their Tough as a Mother campaign. Tough as a Mother is a statewide campaign launched in May 2020 and has been working to decrease the stigma around maternal substance use disorder. The Illuminate Colorado Team provided an overview of their campaign and how others can access the shared resources, followed by time for Q&A.

OMNI Institute, in partnership with the JBS RCORP-TA team, created the Spring 2023 Data Learning Collaborative for all RCORP grant recipients. These sessions built the foundation for data learning, and we dove into data-related topics during each month’s skills-building session.

During the initial stages of the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program (RCORP) implementation, lead agencies of RCORP consortia reported difficulty recruiting new members, building key partnerships, and planning and coordinating RCORP-focused activities. Fortunately, with dedication and collaborative work, consortium growth and engagement became successful at the end of the grant period, as reported by 87.5 percent of the grantees. Findings in the report available for download below are based on qualitative interviews conducted with RCORP grantees between 9/1/2020 and 8/31/2022.

The Disparities Impact Statement (DIS) template is a deliverable for this project that you will be required to complete. There was a webinar discussing the DIS for all relevant cohorts on November 15, 2022. This webinar provided RCORP grantees with the tools to complete a disparities impact statement, to support efforts to address populations in rural communities that have historically suffered from poorer health outcomes and health inequities as a part of the prevention, treatment, and recovery of SUD/OUD. We strongly encourage you to review these documents or listen to the recording when it is posted to the RCORP- TA portal at a later date. There are many pathways of recovery from substance use disorder, and all are cause for celebration. This panel featured diverse faces and voices representing a variety of recovery experience including elements of medications for opioid use disorder, alcohol-free recreation, harm reduction mutual aid, outdoor hobbies, yoga and meditation, recovery-supportive housing, collegiate recovery, 12-step mutual aid, and more.

This session highlighted over a decade of Community Apgar research and its implementation supporting community development for physician recruitment and retention in rural FQHCs and CAHs. This presentation also included ongoing implementation of the program through collaboration with 3RNet and the use of a “Factors Book” which can highlight community assets and focus recruitment efforts to better meet community needs.

Recovery housing and a social recovery approach offer a broad, holistic, multifaceted strategy for rural or urban communities.
