April is Alcohol Awareness Month. This month offers a time to raise awareness and understanding of alcohol use and misuse. Resources and support is available for individuals struggling with alcohol use. In addition, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides a social media toolkit for communities to utilize.

This presentation discussed the evolution of North Carolina’s formerly siloed sectors: prevention, treatment, & recovery. The introduction of Recovery Community Center (RCC) funding helped to develop a network of community-based recovery support services. However, when one of NC’s strongest prevention coalitions received RCC funding, they took it to another level. Keeping strongly rooted in its prevention identity, they expanded their growth into authentic recovery support services and non-arrest diversion partnerships with local law enforcement and treatment providers. Implementation II grantee Wilson Substance Prevention Coalition illustrated some of its full continuum of care programming and how it has adapted to the pandemic’s challenges

HRSA’s Health Centers Program published new research briefs exploring health center capacity in maternity care deserts, differences in clinical quality measures among Appalachian and non-Appalachian health centers, and the role of health centers in providing medication-assisted treatment. The briefs were developed through the UDS Mapper—a tool that helps evaluate the geographic reach, penetration, and growth of the Health Center Program and its relationship to other federally-linked health resources.

In 2016, the United States Congress authorized and appropriated funding to fight the opioid epidemic through the Department of Health and Human Services . Among other initiatives, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) gave the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration authority and support to implement new grant programs focused on preventing overdose and treating individuals with OUD.

Illuminate Colorado, an RCORP Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) grantee, and partners presented on their Tough as a Mother campaign. Tough as a Mother is a statewide campaign launched in May 2020 and has been working to decrease the stigma around maternal substance use disorder. The Illuminate Colorado Team provided an overview of their campaign and how others can access the shared resources, followed by time for Q&A.

This session highlighted the ways in which data from RCORP consortia are used, how service capacity and access have changed, and whether there is evidence that the health status of rural residents is improving.
