Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening inflammation of the heart’s chambers and valves that can be difficult and expensive to treat. Like hepatitis and HIV, infective endocarditis can be caused by using needles that are not sterile. Stigma is a social process linked to power and control which leads to creating stereotypes and assigning labels to those that are considered deviate from the norm or behave “badly” -- stigma creates the social conditions that makes people who use drugs believe they are not deserving of being treated with dignity & respect, perpetuating feelings of fear and isolation. The University of Vermont Center on Rural Addiction (UVM CORA), the University of Rochester, and the Fletcher Group have conducted an online survey assessing SUD stigma (including stigmatizing language), treatment needs and barriers, and concerns through the perspectives of rural, RCORP-affiliated practitioners. The data report explores the findings of the survey, including practitioner recommendations on improving access to OUD treatment.

The University of Rochester Recovery Center of Excellence, one of three FORHP-supported Rural Centers of Excellence on Substance Use Disorder, has developed comprehensive training on the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) in primary care. This no-cost training prepares providers and staff to deliver evidence-based care to patients. Continuing education credits are available.

Hepatitis C: State of Medicaid Access is a collaboration between the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation of Harvard
Law School (CHLPI) and the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable (NVHR). The project evaluates hepatitis C (HCV)
treatment restriction policies across state Medicaid programs, including all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto
Rico (referred to in this report as “states”). The goal of this project is to encourage states and empower advocates to work
toward improved access to curative HCV treatment across all Medicaid programs, in order to ensure that every Medicaid
enrollee who can benefit from this treatment is able to access it.
