This toolkit is designed primarily for substance use and child welfare practitioners, as well as other service providers and health system planners who offer services to, or design services with, pregnant women and new mothers who use substances. Much is changing in the substance use and child welfare fields to bring forth approaches that are culturally safe, trauma informed, harm reduction-oriented and participant-driven. This toolkit highlights these advances and invites people working in both systems to think about how we can continue to improve our work, in partnership with the women who use these services.

This webinar provided new information on the risks and clinical challenges presented by individuals who use psychostimulants (cocaine, methamphetamine and prescription stimulants). A review of the clinical strategies that are important in working with this population were presented, including psychosocial and medication treatments for those with stimulant use disorder. Building on Part I of the stigma webinar series and its introduction of a statewide collective impact model for addressing stigma, this webinar delivered the first part of the model that also served as its conceptual framework. This webinar introduced the stages of change and showed grantees how these apply to their target populations. We also discussed how those same principles applied to grantee engagement of community stakeholders and their openness to evidence-based practices that reduce morbidity and mortality related to SUD/OUD.

Stimulant intoxication, withdrawal, and psychosis have accepted and established treatment strategies. Several lifesaving harm reduction interventions/services are available. There are no Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for treatment of stimulant use disorder, although several are promising. Behavioral treatment, especially the use of contingency management (and other approaches with supportive evidence), has by far the best evidence of effectiveness. The presenter reviewed topics of importance to clinicians treating individuals with stimulant use disorder.

This workshop will explore the link between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) of individuals with substance use concerns and its impact on their development. We will explore the experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors that may present challenges in development. We will discuss practical, trauma-informed, outcome-driven strategies that improve the outcomes.

This session presented resources and elements to consider when planning to collaborate with a local jail to establish pre- and post-release programing and coordination of care and services for individuals with SUD. A real-world example was presented by an RCORP grantee showcasing its First Day Forward Program.
