Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are events of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction that occur between birth and 17 years of age. Multiple studies established the association between ACEs, risky behaviors, and poor physical and mental health outcomes in childhood and beyond. Rural and minority children often have higher rates of ACEs exposure than their peers.

The Behavioral Health Data Learning Collaborative presentation will introduce goals of understanding data and data sharing, use of indicators and data sources, and data driven programming and quality improvement. This workshop will explore the link between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) of individuals with substance use concerns and its impact on their development. We will explore the experiences, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors that may present challenges in development. Adverse childhood experiences, known as ACEs, are defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as "potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood." One common example is experienced by children growing up in a household with parents engaged in substance use. This publication is the first in a two-part series addressing the relationship between ACEs and substance use throughout the life cycle, covering substance use as an ACE from infancy through adolescence.
