These guidelines were developed in response to a resolution from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), “to develop and publish minimum requirements and international guidelines on psychosocially assisted pharmacological treatment of persons dependent on opioids”

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) developed this National Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder to provide information on evidence-based treatment of opioid use disorder.

In 2016, the United States Congress authorized and appropriated funding to fight the opioid epidemic through the Department of Health and Human Services . Among other initiatives, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) gave the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration authority and support to implement new grant programs focused on preventing overdose and treating individuals with OUD.

This session highlighted the ways in which data from RCORP consortia are used, how service capacity and access have changed, and whether there is evidence that the health status of rural residents is improving.
