Researchers assessed disparities in the availability of hospital-based transitional opioid programs for substance use disorder (SUD) in urban and rural settings.

This study assessed the associations between insurance status and 6-month retention of patients with opioid use disorder on telehealth platforms. Patients whose insurance paid for their care were most likely to still be receiving buprenorphine 6 months after starting treatment. Uninsured patients who paid cash were more likely to be in treatment at 6 months than people with insurance that did not cover their care. Findings showed an association between in-network insurance benefits and retention, which may affect the opioid crisis.

The report Financing Peer Recovery Support: Opportunities to Enhance the Substance Use Disorder Workforce was prepared for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Center for Financing Reform and Innovation (CFRI) and provides background history of the development of Peer Recovery (PR), including an overview of the current landscape of PR Programs. This report also provides a description of the variation in peer recovery rates, supervision, credentialing, and substance use disorder vs mental health.

Substance use is a major health issue among individuals in custody, and for these individuals, withdrawal from substances can be life-threatening. Jurisdictions have a pressing responsibility to save lives by implementing policies and protocol that align with legal, regulatory, and clinical standards related to appropriate withdrawal management. Recently released Guidelines for Managing Substance Withdrawal in Jails sets forth best clinical practices and actionable guidance for jails. This presentation discussed readiness for implementation, key components of implementation, and solutions for implementation in local communities and jails.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP), and Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. (AHP) has provided a curated resource list for corrections officers and other jail staff members manage the well-being of individuals in jail custody who have SUD. The categories of resources were prioritized by participants in a jail practitioner roundtable on opioid-related training needs convened by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

The University of Rochester Recovery Center of Excellence, one of three FORHP-supported Rural Centers of Excellence on Substance Use Disorder, has developed comprehensive training on the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) in primary care. This no-cost training prepares providers and staff to deliver evidence-based care to patients. Continuing education credits are available.
