The intersection of opioid abuse, particularly injection drug use (IDU), and HIV is well documented; in fact, IDU is the second most frequent route of HIV transmission. Injection drug use, either directly or via sexual contact with an IDU partner, accounts for one-third of the estimated AIDS cases since the beginning of the epidemic, and 18 percent of new infections in the United States.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) want greater awareness of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their connection to high rates of overdose and suicide. This week they announced a new training webpage, UrgentRelatedPreventable.org, designed in collaboration with the American Public Health Association to provide background and talking points. The site explains how exposure to certain events and conditions in childhood have lasting effects on health, well-being, and prosperity far into adulthood. The Center of Excellence for Integrated Health Solutions (funded by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and operated by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing) and the School-Based Health Alliance now has a guide to help mental health organizations have successful partnerships with schools as a way to help the mental health and substance use care for K-12 students. The guide provides information to consider, as well as resource recommendations.
