This program brief highlights the Alliance for Prevention and Wellness (APW) use of Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) data to target a broad range of substance use prevention and education activities to ZIP codes with the highest rate of overdoses. Over the past 20 years, drug overdose deaths have increased dramatically in the United States. Most of these deaths involved opioids, including prescription pain medications, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. These are called opioid-related overdoses and often occur as a result of respiratory depression caused by opioids, even when other medications and drugs are involved.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded an evaluation study of post-overdose outreach programs in Massachusetts known as the PRONTO Study. This study group assessed the evidence on post-overdose outreach.
