This webinar provided the foundational information necessary to plan and implement effective anti-stigma strategies. We defined stigma and internalized stigma and their impact on vulnerable populations—drug policy, public perception, healthcare access. We then explored relevant resources, helpful tools, and connect with national organizations doing work in this space.

This webinar will provide an overview of racial and ethnic minority members of rural communities; describe the relationship between social determinants of health, health disparities, health equity, and rural racial and ethnic minority populations; and propose characteristics for an effective engagement and collaboration plan for working with these populations. The presenter will discuss strategies for enhancing engaging and collaborating with rural racial and ethnic minority populations and review available resources and tools.

We know from RCORP grantees, first responders, hospitals, people who use drugs, the media and other allies that many communities are seeing spikes in overdose (OD) events and deaths since the onset of COVID-19. Sometimes these deaths come at alarming levels because of stretched public health infrastructure and the time it takes to turn around data. The webinar took place on May 26, 2020.

During this webinar, Claudia Jasso, Chief Development Officer for RCORP Implementation grantee, Amistades, Inc. and Janet Ojeda, JBS International Technical Expert Lead will present an overview of the unique cultural context, core beliefs, and value systems that should be at the heart of understanding and engaging with Latino populations. Presenters will discuss how racial inequity, assimilation, risk factors, and historical and immigration trauma have created a landscape where there is a critical need for person centered, culturally respectful and relevant mental health and SUD/OUD supports and service delivery for Latino people. All RCORP grantees, consortium members, and key community partners are welcome to attend.
