This week, the federal agency that researches what makes health care safer, more affordable, higher quality, and accessible to all released its compendium of data and trends for rural populations. The chartbook is part of the annual National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report (NHQDR) that assesses the performance of our health care system across these measures.

The University of Rochester Recovery Center of Excellence, one of three FORHP-supported Rural Centers of Excellence on Substance Use Disorder, has developed comprehensive training on the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD) in primary care. This no-cost training prepares providers and staff to deliver evidence-based care to patients. Continuing education credits are available.

CDC’s Division of Overdose Prevention has developed an interactive data visualization tool, the DOSE Dashboard, which displays current nonfatal overdose data. The nonfatal drug overdose data on this dashboard are from CDC’s Drug Overdose Surveillance and Epidemiology (DOSE) system, which captures electronic health record information in syndromic surveillance data systems. DOSE data can be used to compare monthly and annual trends in nonfatal drug overdose-related ED visits by drug type (i.e., all drugs, all opioids, heroin, and all stimulants), state, and sex and age group.

The MAT for OUD Playbook aims to address the growing need for guidance as more primary care practices and health systems begin to implement MAT. The Playbook’s framework is designed to be useful for practices implementing any array of MAT services.

This program brief highlights the Alliance for Prevention and Wellness (APW) use of Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) data to target a broad range of substance use prevention and education activities to ZIP codes with the highest rate of overdoses. The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists established the PMP Subcommittee to provide a platform for information exchange and addressing the need for a standardized metrics for opioid surveillance using PMP data. PMP group members identified a need to provide guidance for new PMP data users. Group members collaborated to write and develop a very comprehensive two-part How To Guide that provides instructions for new PMP data users.

As states seek new tools to meet the needs of individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid use disorder, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) offer unique resources and examples for developing integrated and cost-effective health care services for complex and chronic conditions. The National Academy for State Health Policy developed this toolkit to share innovations, resources, and lessons learned from five state teams (AL, IL, SD, VA, and WI) that are working to strengthen the capacity of their FQHCs to deliver SUD care
