The intersection of opioid abuse, particularly injection drug use (IDU), and HIV is well documented; in fact, IDU is the second most frequent route of HIV transmission. Injection drug use, either directly or via sexual contact with an IDU partner, accounts for one-third of the estimated AIDS cases since the beginning of the epidemic, and 18 percent of new infections in the United States.

The document provides guidance on how to plan for an outbreak of HIV or HCV among PWID including considerations for developing an outbreak response plan to minimize the impact of the outbreak on the community and stop further transmission. The document also outlines strategies to detect and investigate a possible outbreak.

As HIV transmission via injection drugs are increasing, knowing the variation in which the the transmission occurs can be beneficial in treatment and intervention. Authors of the study look into the frequency and distribution of HIV transmission behaviors among people who use drugs in rural areas to possibly determine if interventions could be universally effective. Data collected in the study suggests that there are many variations in the transmission behaviors.

Nearly 92,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2020, marking a 30% increase from the year before, a 75% increase over five years and by far the highest annual total on record, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Preliminary figures suggest that the 2021 death toll from overdoses may be even higher.
While overdose death rates have increased in every major demographic group in recent years, no group has seen a bigger increase than Black men. As a result, Black men have overtaken White men and are now on par with American Indian or Alaska Native men as the demographic groups most likely to die from overdoses.

Like hepatitis and HIV, infective endocarditis can be caused by using needles that are not sterile. Stigma is a social process linked to power and control which leads to creating stereotypes and assigning labels to those that are considered deviate from the norm or behave “badly” -- stigma creates the social conditions that makes people who use drugs believe they are not deserving of being treated with dignity & respect, perpetuating feelings of fear and isolation. This resource also includes additional stigma documents.

The University of Vermont Center on Rural Addiction (UVM CORA), the University of Rochester, and the Fletcher Group have conducted an online survey assessing SUD stigma (including stigmatizing language), treatment needs and barriers, and concerns through the perspectives of rural, RCORP-affiliated practitioners. The data report explores the findings of the survey, including practitioner recommendations on improving access to OUD treatment.
