The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has new resources available when supporting pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders. Each resource supplements the SAMHSA Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants publication.

This updated TIP reviews what is known about treating the medical, psychiatric, and SUD-related problems associated with the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as the misuse of prescription stimulants. The TIP offers recommendations on treatment approaches and maximizing treatment engagement and retention, and strategies for initiating and maintaining abstinence.

Buprenorphine utilization is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Given the recent
increase in child maltreatment reports related to parental substance use, research should explore the correlation between buprenorphine treatment and child maltreatment–related outcomes.

This presentation will focus on the relationship between trauma and substance use as it relates to treatment for women, as well as a discussion of impactful trauma-informed and gender-responsive interventions. Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS), a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration-funded grant initiative, announced the release of Practice-Based Guidelines: Buprenorphine in the Age of Fentanyl. The guide gives practitioners a blueprint on treating fentanyl use disorder based on available research combined with emerging clinical experience on the use of buprenorphine in the treatment of individuals using fentanyl and other highly potent synthetic opioids.

There are multiple systems that can help individuals to address substance use disorder (SUD). A new report from the Addiction and Public Policy Initiative of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law Center discusses how these multiple systems are often disjointed which creates barriers for those needing to access services for SUD.
