Effective Harm Reduction Strategies for People Who Actively Use Opioids and/or Psychostimulants
Participants will learn evidenced-based harm reduction strategies to keep people who use opioids and psychostimulants alive with reduced disease burden. Presenters will discuss methods of engaging people who actively use opioids and/or psychostimulants, harm reduction interventions, overdose prevention and response, overamping prevention and response, and linkages to care.

Background: Rates of fatal overdose (OD) from synthetic opioids rose nearly 60 % from 2016 to 2018. 911 Good Samaritan Laws (GSLs) are an evidenced-based strategy for preventing OD fatality. This study describes patrol officers’ knowledge of their state’s GSL, experience with OD response, and their perspectives on strategies to prevent and respond to opioid OD.

We know from RCORP grantees, first responders, hospitals, people who use drugs, the media and other allies that many communities are seeing spikes in overdose (OD) events and deaths since the onset of COVID-19. Sometimes these deaths come at alarming levels because of stretched public health infrastructure and the time it takes to turn around data. The webinar took place on May 26, 2020.

Drug overdose deaths increased 30% in the United States from 2019 to 2020. Known health disparities exist in overdose mortality rates, particularly among certain racial/ethnic minority populations. Implementation of an evidence-based, culturally responsive, multi-sectoral approach is critical to reducing disparities in overdose rates. This includes addressing structural barriers and enhancing efforts such as linkage to care and harm reduction services.
