This study looks at how common the presence of alcohol is in opioid overdose deaths. While there are "waves" of the opioid crisis, the authors studied how alcohol affect individuals in this fourth wave as it is characterized by opioid-stimulant polysubstance use.

A recent study, Stigmatizing Imagery For Substance Use Disorders: A Qualitative Exploration, explored the use of stigmatizing and non-stigmatizing imagery in the field of substance use disorders and law enforcement. While the discussion of stigmatizing language has been around, the discussion of stigmatizing imagery is important to have as it may have effects on treatment, recovery, and reintegration. The qualitative study interviewed people with lived substance use disorder experience who identified stigmatizing imagery and the possible implications it could have.

West Virginia leads the nation in overdose death rate and both counties where participants were interviewed for this study were considered to be at risk for an HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs. This study asked the question ‘What on-the-ground environmental factors among PWIH could be contributing to this overdose rate?
