The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has new resources available when supporting pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorders. Each resource supplements the SAMHSA Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants publication.

Buprenorphine utilization is an effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD). Given the recent
increase in child maltreatment reports related to parental substance use, research should explore the correlation between buprenorphine treatment and child maltreatment–related outcomes.

Innovative at their inception three decades ago, drug courts confront a practical and ethical obligation to reimagine some core practices and assumptions. A shifting legal and public health landscape means, for example, increased scrutiny of the courts’ focus on abstinence and mandated treatment, and the use of jail. The Bureau of Justice Assistance and the National Institute of Corrections published the Guidelines for Managing Substance Withdrawal in Jails: A Tool for Local Government Officials, Jail Administrators, Correctional Officers, and Health Care Professionals to help increase access to evidence-based treatment for individuals with SUD and those who are at risk for overdose. There is a high prevalence of SUD among individuals who are incarcerated. Withdrawal while incarcerated is less discussed, but still poses a risk for individuals. The guidelines were created to help jail administrators protect the health and rights of people incarcerated.

This study looks at perinatal care for pregnant people with substance use disorders. Stigma and lack of access to treatment and recovery increases the risk for pregnant people. Results and suggestions from the study include the need to expand OUD treatment training, clarification on child welfare reporting rules, the need to include philanthropic investment, and more.

This report provides recommendations for actions that state and local leaders can take immediately to increase evidence-based practices, decrease arbitrary determinations, and prevent overdose deaths. The report also provides concrete steps that will, in the longterm, help dismantle a siloed system of unequal access and disparities and move towards an integrated system that promotes restorative justice, where people and families are treated with dignity, and where addiction is treated as a health and wellness matter rather than one of moral failing or criminality.
