As state policymakers confront the substance use disorder (SUD) epidemic, they require a wide range of data – often found in disparate systems – to understand its impact and craft more effective treatment programs and interventions. This report explores best practices and sources for data gathering and describes how states can help communities access and use data to support local efforts.

o CAST (calculating for an adequate system tool) produces community-specific assessments of the capacity of the components of a community substance abuse care system. CAST generates recommendations by the application of social and community determinants of health as risk coefficients to each estimate of component need. CAST can assist public health practitioners in evaluation and improvement of the capacity of community-based, substance abuse care systems.

The Opioid Response Network is making available a new dental curriculum on SBIRT (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment), an evidence-based approach to managing patients with or at risk of developing a substance use disorder (SUD).
The curriculum was developed for dentists by the ORN grant through a collaboration with the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the Division on Substance Use Disorders, Columbia University Irving Medical Center/NYSPI.

The Townhall TeleECHO presentation will introduce a monthly interactive opportunity for clinicians and their support staff to address challenges and share solutions and successes to gain confidence in addressing OUD with MOUD. The Behavioral Health Data Learning Collaborative presentation will introduce goals of understanding data and data sharing, use of indicators and data sources, and data driven programming and quality improvement. Open discussion will follow each presentation.

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists established the PMP Subcommittee to provide a platform for information exchange and addressing the need for a standardized metrics for opioid surveillance using PMP data. PMP group members identified a need to provide guidance for new PMP data users. Group members collaborated to write and develop a very comprehensive two-part How To Guide that provides instructions for new PMP data users.
