The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP), and Advocates for Human Potential, Inc. (AHP) has provided a curated resource list for corrections officers and other jail staff members manage the well-being of individuals in jail custody who have SUD. The categories of resources were prioritized by participants in a jail practitioner roundtable on opioid-related training needs convened by the Bureau of Justice Assistance.

This webinar provided RCORP grantees with the tools to complete a disparities impact statement, to support efforts to address populations in rural communities that have historically suffered from poorer health outcomes and health inequities as a part of the prevention, treatment, and recovery of SUD/OUD.

The Disparities Impact Statement (DIS) template is a deliverable for this project that you will be required to complete. There was a webinar discussing the DIS for all relevant cohorts on November 15, 2022. This webinar provided RCORP grantees with the tools to complete a disparities impact statement, to support efforts to address populations in rural communities that have historically suffered from poorer health outcomes and health inequities as a part of the prevention, treatment, and recovery of SUD/OUD. We strongly encourage you to review these documents or listen to the recording when it is posted to the RCORP- TA portal at a later date. This fact sheet discusses new amendments to Tennessee’s naloxone access laws that went into effect on July 1, 2022. These amendments increase access to naloxone in several ways and remove some confusing language that previously limited the impact of state efforts to increase access to lifesaving opioid antagonist medications

In this cross-sectional, multistate study of rural communities, 79% of people using drugs reported past-30-day methamphetamine use; nonfatal overdose was greatest in people using both methamphetamine and opioids (22%) vs opioids alone (14%), or methamphetamine alone (6%). People using both substances reported the least access to treatment; only 17% of those using methamphetamine alone had naloxone.

A new brief from the National Center for Health Statistics gives geographic detail on the latest increase in overdose death rates. Overall, urban counties had higher rates, but eight states – California, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Vermont, and Virginia – had rates that were higher in rural counties.

During this session, we discussed what meaningful inclusion is (and is not) and we offered tangible steps toward developing trust, dignity, and inclusion of PWUDs. Meeting people where they are requires an element of internal self-reflection and honesty, both personally and within the organization.
