Using data from 77 harm reduction programs in 25 US states, researchers found that 12-15% of powder methamphetamine and powder cocaine also contained fentanyl although the prevalence varied geographically. Prevalence of fentanyl in crystal methamphetamine and crack cocaine was lower. Heroin and xylazine were also found in unregulated stimulants. Xylazine reduced the ability to detect fentanyl.

West Virginia leads the nation in overdose death rate and both counties where participants were interviewed for this study were considered to be at risk for an HIV outbreak among people who inject drugs. This study asked the question ‘What on-the-ground environmental factors among PWIH could be contributing to this overdose rate?

In the context of the trends in Oregon SUD metrics and the increasing infectious complications related to IDU in other jurisdictions and their implications for HIV and HCV transmission, we sought to 1) describe statewide trends in IDU-related serious bacterial infections (SBI) hospitalizations overall and by SBI type and drug use diagnosis, 2) assess IDU-related SBI diagnoses among individuals living with HIV and HCV, and 3) and determine the annual costs of IDU-related SBI overall and by SBI type.

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists established the PMP Subcommittee to provide a platform for information exchange and addressing the need for a standardized metrics for opioid surveillance using PMP data. PMP group members identified a need to provide guidance for new PMP data users. Group members collaborated to write and develop a very comprehensive two-part How To Guide that provides instructions for new PMP data users.
