Detoxification is the process of taking a person off an opioid on which he or she is physically dependent. The detoxification process can be fast or slow. This article describes the advantages and disadvantages of medically supervised withdrawal programs.

In 2016, the United States Congress authorized and appropriated funding to fight the opioid epidemic through the Department of Health and Human Services . Among other initiatives, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) gave the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration authority and support to implement new grant programs focused on preventing overdose and treating individuals with OUD.

This session highlighted the ways in which data from RCORP consortia are used, how service capacity and access have changed, and whether there is evidence that the health status of rural residents is improving.
