There are multiple systems that can help individuals to address substance use disorder (SUD). A new report from the Addiction and Public Policy Initiative of the O’Neill Institute for National and Global Health Law at Georgetown Law Center discusses how these multiple systems are often disjointed which creates barriers for those needing to access services for SUD.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has published the new resource "Counseling Approaches To Promote Recovery From Problematic Substance Use and Related Issues". This Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) provides guidance to counselors, administrators, and supervisors about recovery-oriented services, supports, and care, allowing them to better serve individuals in or seeking recovery from problematic substance use.

The Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) Cohort I tip sheet is a result of collaborative efforts of the NAS Cohort I grant recipients. Drawing on the insights and experiences of our grantees, we identified 9 key recommendations. The MOUD Best Practices Webinar series takes a person-centered, outcomes-focused approach to presenting and discussing best practices in the use of medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD), starting with client engagement and initiation of MOUD, patient stabilization and retention in MOUD, and supporting recovery during MOUD. The focus of each presentation in the series will be on the application of best practices to meet your community’s goals for each of the three topic areas, including adapting them to your local resources while maintaining fidelity to their evidence base.
At the conclusion of Session 1, participants will be able to: describe specific best practices related to engagement and initiation of MOUD, connect best practices to the community’s outcomes and goals and adapt best practices to local needs and resources while maintaining fidelity to the evidence base.

o CAST (calculating for an adequate system tool) produces community-specific assessments of the capacity of the components of a community substance abuse care system. CAST generates recommendations by the application of social and community determinants of health as risk coefficients to each estimate of component need. CAST can assist public health practitioners in evaluation and improvement of the capacity of community-based, substance abuse care systems.

In light of the accelerating and rapidly evolving overdose crisis in the United States (US), new strategies are needed to address the epidemic and to efficiently engage and retain individuals in care for opioid use disorder (OUD). Moreover, there is an increasing need for novel approaches to using health data to identify gaps in the cascade of care for persons with OUD.
