This toolkit is intended to give prescribers a broad overview of medication utilization management techniques and describe ways that prescribers can facilitate patient access to needed medications. It focuses on prescribed medications that are filled by retail pharmacies; it does not cover the processes for methadone or specialty pharmacy products, such as injectable or implantable medications, all of which are commonly covered by a patient’s medical benefit rather than their pharmacy benefit.

This update of the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment is intended to address addiction to a wide variety of drugs, including nicotine, alcohol, and illicit and prescription drugs. State policymakers are interested in learning about the most effective treatments to address OUD and avoid unintended consequences such as overdose events, mortality from overdose, and use of illicit and unregulated drugs. This presentation covered recovery housing and MOUD in the context of issues emerging in rural America resulting from the pandemic and its impact on the rates of SUD and drug overdose. Also, presenters discussed the impact of the pandemic on corrections and the actions of states in response to COVID as it affects those with SUD. Presenters gave an overview of how recovery housing in this context can be developed especially in rural areas.

As states seek new tools to meet the needs of individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and opioid use disorder, federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) offer unique resources and examples for developing integrated and cost-effective health care services for complex and chronic conditions. The National Academy for State Health Policy developed this toolkit to share innovations, resources, and lessons learned from five state teams (AL, IL, SD, VA, and WI) that are working to strengthen the capacity of their FQHCs to deliver SUD care

Whereas outpatient treatment with medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is evidence based, there is a large network of inpatient facilities in the US that are reimbursed by commercial insurers and do not typically offer MOUD. This study is a comparison of rates of overdose and hospitalization after initiation of medication for Opioid Use Disorder in the inpatient vs outpatient setting.

The National Governors Association and the American Correctional Association recently released a new toolkit on "Expanding Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder in Corrections and Community Settings: A Roadmap for States to Reduce Opioid Use Disorder for People in the Justice System."
This roadmap highlights existing state efforts and serves as a policy development tool for Governors and state officials seeking to improve coordination and bolster existing efforts across state agencies to address OUD among people involved in the justice system by expanding access to evidence-based medications. The following are key steps for supporting MOUD in corrections settings.
