The toolkit Stimulant Safety: Getting Amped Up to Reduce Harms When Using Stimulants was developed through the CDC-funded National Harm Reduction Technical Assistance Center in collaboration with the NASTAD Drug User Health team and consultants. This resource provides education on the reasons people take stimulants, how to minimize harm, reduce stigma around stimulants, support peoples' positive experiences, the intersection of stimulant use and sexual safety, and much more.

In the United States, combined stimulant/opioid overdose mortality has risen dramatically over the last decade. These increases may particularly affect non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic populations. We used death certificate data from the US National Center for Health Statistics (2007–2019) to compare state-level trends in overdose mortality due to opioids in combination with 1) cocaine and 2) methamphetamine and other stimulants (MOS) across racial/ethnic groups (non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and non-Hispanic Asian American/Pacific Islander).

Innovative at their inception three decades ago, drug courts confront a practical and ethical obligation to reimagine some core practices and assumptions. A shifting legal and public health landscape means, for example, increased scrutiny of the courts’ focus on abstinence and mandated treatment, and the use of jail. The guide from the National Council for Mental Wellbeing aims to support harm reduction organizations operating in virtual environments and summarizes some of the strategies that harm reduction organizations have developed and found to be effective at maintaining connection while doing harm reduction work virtually. Harm reduction continued during the COVID-19 pandemic and organizations effectively changed the way services were delivered, primarily through telework.

The webinar held by NASTAD on October 26, 2022, 4:00-5:30pm featured a dynamic discussion on integrating harm reduction principles and practices, including naloxone distribution, safe disposal, and harm reduction supply access, within the community health care setting. Health centers across the country that offer these services as part of comprehensive care shared their experiences and the ways that service expansion can contribute to engagement and care access.

Sonoran Prevention Works (SPW) shared some of its experiences implementing harm reduction in Cochise County, one of the more rural counties in AZ. SPW provides street-based outreach, testing, and peer support; offers training, education, and technical assistance and TA; and engages in local and state advocacy work.

The consequences for failing to treat OUD within correctional settings are significant. In addition to risk of overdose, most individuals who receive MAT in the community lose access to treatment upon confinement; studies show these individuals experience extreme stress. Individuals with opioid dependence entering correctional facilities are also at high risk for opioid withdrawal syndrome.
