Non-fatal opioid overdose (NFOO) is a significant cause of opioid-related morbidity in the United States. As the number of NFOOs continues to grow, it is important to understand the short- and long-term consequences of NFOO. This report examines the existing literature on the acute and chronic health and functional outcomes of individuals who experience NFOO, and also identifies differences in outcomes for NFOOs involving illicitly-manufactured fentanyl.

Just 5 years ago, only 1% of jails and prisons provided MOUD, but this practice has flourished. Dr. Costello discussed the emerging evidence base for MOUD in jails, regulatory changes, funding opportunities, and the dramatic increase in usage of MOUD in our nation's correctional facilities.

This presentation provided an overview of the (1) current U.S. prevalence of opioid abuse and OUD and their societal consequences, (2) impacts of the opioid epidemic on rural geographic areas and populations, (3) recent emergence of synthetic opioids (e.g., fentanyl) and xylazine in the U.S. drug supply, and (4) most empirically supported treatment for patients with OUD.
