Health care is currently in the middle of a transition from a system of payment based on the volume of services provided (fee-for-service) to payment based on the value of those services (value-based care and alternative payment models).

We know from RCORP grantees, first responders, hospitals, people who use drugs, the media and other allies that many communities are seeing spikes in overdose (OD) events and deaths since the onset of COVID-19. Sometimes these deaths come at alarming levels because of stretched public health infrastructure and the time it takes to turn around data. The webinar took place on May 26, 2020.

The IHS forensic healthcare program was established in 2011 to address sexual violence, and has expanded to include intimate partner violence, child sexual abuse, and elder maltreatment. The program trains providers in forensic medical examinations, evidence collection techniques, and in coordinated community response to address violence.

The Providers Clinical Support System (PCSS) Mentoring Program support is recommended for clinicians who are contemplating or have recently begun prescribing MOUD and would like additional support. PCSS offers three tiers of service at no cost to the recipient: (1) a discussion forum, (2) the ability to submit a clinical question through the PCSS website, and (3) one-on-one mentoring.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has provided resources for families who may be helping a loved one experiencing a mental or substance use disorder. SAMHSA provides documents and videos on how to start the conversation and support guides as families can play a central role in helping loved ones.
